Abstract

The paper gives a brief overview of the main activities for the development of the emerging field of learning analytics led by the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR). The place of the Journal of Learning Analytics is identified Analytics is the most significant new initiative of SoLAR. 

Author Biography

George Siemens, University of Texas at Arlington

George Siemens is an educator and researcher on learning, technology, networks, analytics, and openness in education. He is the author of “Knowing Knowledge”, an exploration of how the context and characteristics of knowledge have changed and what it means to organizations today, and the “Handbook of Emerging Technologies for Learning”. George recently joined the faculty and staff of The University of Texas at Arlington as the executive director of the Learning Innovation and Networked Knowledge
(LINK) Research Lab. He was formerly a professor at the Center for Distance Education and a researcher and strategist with the Technology Enhanced Knowledge Research Institute (TEKRI) at Athabasca University. He is a founding member and current President of the Society for Learning Analytics Research (www.solaresearch.org) and on the editorial board of numerous journals, including JOLT and JIME. He pioneered massive open online courses that have included almost 20,000 participants.
